Plato's allegory of the cave and its connections to Douglass and Emerson

What connections did you find in Self-Reliance and Frederick Douglass?

  1. Self-Reliance, Fredrerick Douglass, & Plato's "Allegory of the Cave" all have in common the idea that one has to become enlightened and realize certain things in order to truly be the best they can and live the right life. The idea that one has to realize (which will sometimes come in the form of an epiphany) what they have to do before they actually can do it. After this, the key is to take action and do your best to maintain or achieve those goals or ideas.

  2. Self-Reliance, Frederick Douglas, & Plato's "Allegory of the Cave" all have the idea that everyone needs to know who they are and what they want in order to fully live their lives. Frederick Douglas learned of himself (his goals) and the evils of slavery. His hardships derive from slavery and racism. Plato explains how a philosopher is one who is able to see differently from the others in the cave. Its more important to have wisdom and virtue than money. Emerson believes acting differently to please others is wrong and one should be themselves.

  3. Plato's "Allegory of the Cave", Self-Reliance and Frederick Douglas all have the common reoccuring motif of trusting ones self and going above and beyond. In all three pieces of work, a certain individual is faced with a form of adversity. Another interesting note is the idea of pre-knowledge. Everyone already knows what the righteous thing to do is, but it is the select few who discover what they already know, that end up being the wisest and triumphant above the others. Though in this case, being wise means you have an unordinary amount of courage compared to the common individual. Despite such an individual accomplishment, wisdom can be contrevorsial to those who are ignorant. However, it is those in the end who come out of the cave, or rebel against slavery, or take their own actions as an independent person, that make them higher than the rest of society. tony cruz
